  • In order to pull in global education for this standard I would have students research an issue that affects citizens of a specific location. This topic would be researched and presented in an unbiased, objective manner, yet after this part is complete, I would have the students explore the issue through the lens of a person that is directly affected by this issue. They would have to persuade their audience through writing why the issue is harmful as well as give a plan of action to help combat this particular topic.

  • Students will research a topic of their choice and discover what countries and communities are affected by their particular issue. All different perspectives will be explored.

  • Students will write expository essays and persuasive letters to complete this assignment. They will have to research, synthesize, and write.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.9-10.3

Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences.

  • Students will research a particular cultural group they are interested in and find a folktale that has been passed down from generation to generation. After reading through this folktale, they will orate the tale to group members as well as give a brief presentation on what that culture is all about. Students will then write their own folktale, basing their plot off of what they have learned from that particular culture.

  • Students will research a culture of interest. Students will read multiple folktales to get an idea of how to write their own original tale.

  • Students will orate, write, research, and present.

Research Question

What global issues are Senegalese students concerned with?

  • Violence

  • Corruption

  • Trash

  • Jobs

  • Terrorism

I was able to pose my research question to students and staff over in Senegal. We were able to have a dialogue about these issues, which I was able to share with my students when I got back. My students were able to see that the fears and concerns of Senegalese students were similar to how they felt about the world. This was effective in helping bring the world a little closer together. I hope that my stories and teaching will inspire students to think and act on a global scale.
